This is not a stall... I need help. The problem is I have little time. However, there's the big issue with the layout that I am not quite sure how to handle. I will continue doing things the way its been going, of course taking into consideration the complaints/criticism.

Start sending me the articles personally to my inbox... (request e-mail address in pm). I will start making do with what I get and have, and then do the second issue. Due to the time constraint, I cannot give you a date when it will be ready. If you are prepared to work it like that, with occasional progress reports, then fine- issue #2 will get done.

This time round, I am not going to pick a popular anime title for review, only to find out later that everyone thought it sucked and my rating thereof was too much! Pick an anime title- review it, rate it, and I'll find the artwork for it and do the page layout.

I've already sent a review to Novalis, should I still send the article to you personally?

novalis is still the reviews editor... I think it'd be best if we send stuff to her and she forwards it to Jason once she's proofread it and given it the go-ahead.

I'll try and compile that critique list and post it soon (not tonight though).

I received one article so far, and the person sent it to me in layout-ready InDesign files. I am highly impressed.

The way forward, I think, is to load up the magazine onto Dropbox, and grant permissions to those of you who work on the layout, and then, in my role as Editor, I'll check things out, and do proof-reading and all that stuff. Been thinking about it and that's one of the ways this can work! With two or more people working on this magazine's layout, it can be a self-sustaining thing and won't take up too much of everyone's time!

Regards,
Jason

Afternoon guys!

I must apologise for my absence in this matter.
My life has taken a turn for the errr...interesting...
Work has turned all kinds of buys...new career opportunity that came up and then the fact that work is filtering 80% of the internet including this forum is not helping me.

Jason if it is possible can you please send me an email to my work/opersonal email addresses with the progress on this so that i can see what i can assist with.  I should be able to assist.

Once again my sincerest apologies.

Quick roll-call - how many of you guys are still around and willing to help out with the second issue? It's been a while since everyone committed so some might not have as much time as they used to, but if you're on-board just post a response here and let us know which areas of the magazine you can assist with. The fields I'm thinking specifically of are:

  • Anime - Goes without saying :p What I'd like to do is balance the material so we can appeal to everyone by doing both retrospectives on classic shows and summaries on newer ones that would feature a mini-synopsis of the story up until the release of that episode, and comments from various magazine staff weighing in on what they think of the show so far. We could also split the coverage between shows airing in Japan (catering to those who download fansubs) and R2 DVD releases for those who prefer buying hard copies.
  • Manga - There's so much to write about, and I've found a majority of fans end up preferring the original work over the animated adaptations so it would be a waste not to explore this more. Like anime, we can focus on both older and newer stuff - if you can help out here, let me know what you're currently following and would like to write about.
  • Articles - This is what would sell us. With just about everyone having access to the internet, we need to compile interesting, original articles with information that can't be easily sourced elsewhere - I'm thinking along the lines of covering the lives and careers of industry legends (Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon), comparisons between anime/manga or anime/live-action adaptations, how to import and what to be aware of, details of local events, cosplay (is Baka Sakura still around?) and so on. Even if you don't have the time to write an article, feel free to share any ideas you might have.
  • Video-Games - While the focus would be primarily on anime, I'm willing to bet that a vast majorty of anyone who watches anime has at least a passing interest in gaming. One or two pages covering new releases or anime-inspired games wouldn't hurt, though this is optional.
  • Asian Cinema - Kind of pushing my own agenda with this. I believe there's a huge amount of content to write on here and a lot of it hasn't been covered elsewhere, and I'm sure we could generate an interest in this - is anyone besides me interested in the topic?
  • Fanart - It's surprisingly hard finding info about South African artists. Instead of a collage of art, I'm thinking we should have around two pages that focuses on the work of a single artist and a small interview - what do you think?
  • Figures - I follow this myself so I can probably take care of this, but it would be nice knowing if anyone else is actively interested in them and is willing to source info.
  • Music - Hey, why not? There's a lot of great music out of Japan I'm sure people would be interested in, and we can extend this to cover K-Pop as well.

If you have any other ideas or can help with something not mentioned above, let us know - I'm also in need of anyone who has experience with design to help out with the magazine's layout as I've got InDesign installed and have picked up the basics fairly quickly, but could really use the help of someone more experienced.

Great! You mentioned back in May that you'd like to do a retrospective, which series would you like to cover? (if you still want to do one - we're totally flexible at this stage)

Good question, we had a structure in place but I think we'll only know how many of those involved are still here in a couple of days - in the interim, you can email it to me at outrack.usp[at]gmail.com and I'll make sure it gets in whatever happens :)

About the retrospective thing, I actually planned on doing one but interest in it kinda faded, so I switched to a review of Welcome to the NHK (which might be old enough for a retrospective, I'm not sure) which I had already written and sent in. That said, I might rewrite it, I'm not too confident in the original review.

The cosplay event at rAge was a huge success this year. The turnout was amazing! It would be cool if someone could write about what happened there? I don't have the time, but you could probably recruit someone from the Cosplay South Africa facebook group who was there - http://www.facebook.com/groups/3415749605/ There's also a lot of photos of the event in the group's albums, if you need hi-res ones you could ask the people who uploaded them.
