I originally wanted to reflect on Anime to live action adaptations using the the proposed AKIRA adaptation as a case study/example but now that that travesty has finally been canned I'm idea-less.

For now, at least - I'm sure it'll rear it's ugly head again sooner or later. The idea of covering adaptations is a good one, I've started doing the same thing with video-games on another site after finding a few that actually tried to be faithful to the source material (or tried to until executive interference derailed the whole thing). There's a lot of junk to sift through, but it is an interesting topic and about to become a relevant one with all the upcoming films on the horizon.

As for feedback on the magazine, there's room for improvement but it leaves a far stronger impression than the first issues of other SA anime mags ever did. I think everyone did a great job of making the articles fun to read and I can't wait to see how things develop from here. The only other thing I have to comment on was the small comic by OopsInsurance - it was amusing, but felt more like filler material... Art is something I've taken an active interest in, so maybe I was just expecting too much :p

I've been crawling comments on other sites and noticed that hardly anyone's even mentioned the asian film reviews - should we drop this altogether? I could probably help out in other areas if necessary.

The asian film reviews are fine...leave them as is.

The oops bit was tongue in cheek and great.

The Asian film reviews are great, I like them. I did however feel that there were too many of them in the issue or they got too much page space. It seemed to me that there were more live-action reviews than anime reviews.
But yeah, I like the live action. Should do some of the live action series as well.

I believe Oops is working on a part 2 for her D.I.Y piece.

I loved the mag! J & J and everyone else - you are all gods!  :-*

Just from a design point of view:

1. A few layout errors were noticed
2. Just some basic spacing and kerning problems.
3. I think the little banner graphics in the back could be stronger like e.g. Otaku stuff. I think the design should reflect more on what the topic's about maybe?
4. Some of the text variates in size of the body copy of the articles.
5. The flow of the copy was a little bit difficult to read sometmies, as the paragraphs were broken up to accomodate images.
6. Some copy overlapping over images, making it difficult to read - and lacks spacing, room to breathe.
7. Maybe more and stronger graphic elements throughout the mag - just to give it a continuous edge.

But honestly, these are easily correctable errors - I think Jason did a great job with the layout. But I think he must've been burnt out by the end, shame!!  :'( That's why with the next issue, we (the article team) will be here to help him!  :P

Glad to hear it, I was expecting my three reviews to be cut down to one page so it was surprising they got so much space (I thought it was awesome, but I'm biased :P) - I'll shorten them to save the editors from having to do it next time around, and try to contribute something on the anime side to balance it out.

Going to be very useful now in saying that I had a great idea for the mag and have since forgotten it.

I'll be printing the mag out at work today and making some "design notes" regarding layout  and general design options.

I would like the 2nd issue to set the trend and expectation for future issues.
With issue 2 we have no excuses and there should be no excuses.

Jason worked his fingers to the bone and it should be taken in consideration that myself and Jason were doing this on our own, in our spare time and Jason did a sterling job with the DTP and layout.
He has laid a great foundation for us to build on.

... And just remembered! I know we should probably be supporting the local industry, but how about an article on importing anime DVDs/figures/etc? Based on experience I've noticed a lot of people seem reluctant to have stuff shipped to them based on misconceptions about customs, items going missing, not sure where to buy, worried about creditcard fraud and so on.

@Outrack: Its a good idea. Perhaps you can present both sides. Heh, if you can sweet talk somebody, maybe we can organise a sponsored giveaway. :D

Also, after my fatal attempt at making an icon for our twitter page I have new found respect for graphic designers, it requires an immense amount of concentration and time. Jason you have now been promoted to 2nd child-naming status.

You should be able to buttonze the Ima kanji that was sent through to you and then carry it through to all your other "buttons".

Most simple graphic effect packages will have a buttonize effect.
You can then use the twitter "t", the Facebook "f" and the Ima Kanji and buttonize them.

Any idea when we'll be getting the template for standardised review format?
