Firstly, with regard to editing (and this will refer mainly to the writing) -  well, aside from some layout errors, the reviews need a lot of polish before they are finalised. And by 'polish', I mean someone has to neaten up all the rough patches, streamline some of the sentences and paragraphs and improve the overall flow of the review. It really helps to have three or four pairs of eyes going over the same work, that way you can pick out more of the mistakes and improve the quality of the writing. That's where you need sub-editors.

Also, the anime reviews felt a little short. *shrugs* That may just be me, but I think it would be better to go a little more in-depth with longer shows like Toradora. And you can do that well enough without delving into spoilers.

The fanart page should also contain names of the artists - otherwise it's just a random collection of pictures.

Also, if you're going to do features of ongoing anime, it chould be more detailed, and including more opinion-related writing would be nice - ANN does something similar with ongoing anime, and I think it's very effective.

And... four stars for Dog Days? Seriously? o.0

Hi

Thanks for this.
I'll address the points seperately...will make it easier.

The reviews were community reviews and have not been edited in any way and this is where the fault lies. We did not proofread or edit them at all.

It has already been noted to have a standard format for reviews and it one of the things that we are looking at will be a minimum number of words.
I am loathe to introduce any stricter formats as in ratings etc. to this as it will remove the "community" feel for the reviews.
As for staff writer reviews, I will be introducing a more rigid review format and would like your input for that.
I was thinking of: Minimum number of words.  Addressing Visuals, Audio, Design, Orginality, Story and Overall.

We did not want to involve any other members aside from myself and Jason to do the 1st magazine for no other reason than it is something that we wanted to do for the community, which includes you.  We were not too certain as to what the feedback would be for the 1st magazine and wanted to remove you from that if it turns out to be negative.

I have already messaged Jason that we will be looking at 2 assistant editors.
1 for editing and general proof reading and another for DTP and layout.
I have already contacted one for the DTP and layout and another person approached us for editing and proof reading.

The fanart page should also contain names of the artists - otherwise it's just a random collection of pictures.

This is something that I noticed when the magazine was launched.
The last week was manic for myself and Jason due to work and general life issues that came up.
We had very little opportunity to review and change additional layout concerns or make changes.

This is something that we will address with future reviews and articles.
I want the magazine to be more opinion driven.

Opinions differ.  :P

The changes that will be made:
 - 2 Assistant Editors (Proof reading and general editing & DTP and Layout)
 - Strict deadlines for submissions and contributions.
 - Dedicated forms of communication for submissions.
 - Standardised format reviews for staff writers.
 - Minimum requirements for community reviews.

Its amazing how word has spread... I spoke to Tu on twitter and he just ran with it. Big thanks to him.

You've probably read this already, but DaRC made some good constructive critism on design & layout in the launch thread. It will better to have it here so to keep all the feedback in one place.

To echo my esteemed colleague Kharrak, Congrats. It is good to see others holding the scene together and pushing forward.

Unlike him however I am going to crit your design simply because if nobody does, things cannot evolve. I too see the influence of Otaku mag. it seems like a stripped down version. It may work well in print but loses impact in PDF. Hell even Otaku with its whizz bang POW loses impact in PDF. Such is the nature of design. That said it is refreshing... evolve it and make it more unique as the months go by.

point 1: Text.
3 columns of plain text hurts the eyes on screen (even on the retina display) use pull quotes and info boxes to break things up. Check any print mag. they all do it. they give choice info to the viewer to let him decide whether he is going to read the whole article. Without them you force the reader to skim each article which is not so reader friendly. Very few people read a mag, word for word, cover to cover in one go.. they read their favs first and the rest in order of importance (according to their own tastes) over time. You need to give him more info to prioritize his reading.

Point 2: Size.
I have a 400mbit/s fiber to home connection. Your servers are in SA so I had to wait t SA slooooooooooooooow speeds. it was tedious (maybe peeps at home are used to it but it was horrific for me after 3 years of real broadband). find a way to trim things so it loads faster. It shouldn't be too hard.

Point 3: Media
If you wanna go print in future (and I hope you do because SA needs it desperately) design your print version and print it.
Design your electronic versions for the screen. make your sizes, speeds and text display friendly. 72dpi lightweight work. There is a reason the majority of online publications are NOT pdfs. I realize that a magazine style release schedule makes better distribution methods more difficult but then why not make it an interactive experience...to make up for the slower turnaround compared to blogs and online mags. Use flash ( flash catalyst makes it easy and quick). consider a digital magazine aimed at tablets supported by a proper website and then go to print when you have a consumer base and advertising revenue (a bit like wired but backwards).

Optimization and simplicity is key. If you want to reach more than just the die hard Otaku you need to make it an easy and pleasurable experience for them.

Dont stress too much though. Look at Otaku issue 1 and see how it evolved We had our fair share of criticism too and how we handled it varied a great deal (I am sad to say). You will undoubtedly go from strength to strength if you take your crits to heart and persevere. Your first go was a valiant effort. I hope you move forward and take your work to the next level and do something good for the scene in SA.

You have taken the torch where we left off. now get out there and set shit on fire!

Above quote basically sums up my feedback, I would of liked to see much more detailed anime reviews, you can actually say quite a lot without spoiling anything. The review can be about the story, animation, sound and characters so you can get quite a lot out of it.

I haven't watched Dog Days, as I saw it wasn't going to interest me so I was disappointed when I saw it was the currently airing feature, was expecting more of the big-time contenders for best anime of season like AnoHana or Hanasaku, maybe even Steins;Gate and C.

Well i pretty much voiced what my concerns are on the ItS OUT thread... but just to state them again... the whole thing felt too short, i agree with darc on the text size and media, the fan art page was much too short, the "how to draw manga section  could use better manga, a different colour text could be used when placed against a difficult to see background (like on the japan now page) and seriously... some better drawings can be used in the in the "so you want to draw manga" section... And you say she teaches art but she can't draw, paint or sculpt? that is like saying elvis sings but he doesn't have a voice

Hi there

Can someone give me two, separate full lists of:

1) All the layout errors

2) All issues with article length, review problems, and such related matters.

Thanks
Jason M

Jason.
I suggest we get Baka and zeiphex to compile those two lists.
Let's evaluate and then see what our options are.

I think that you might have misconstrued the "How to draw manga" article.
It was tongue in cheek, a jab at manga and the countless versions of "How to draw manga." books and courses out there.

Most have been mentioned by my mates on here already.

A major grievance and future foreseeable problem I have already discussed with JAY.
