Found this yesterday whilst ogling over guitars (again...)
http://www.fender.com/features/gilmour/guitar.phpThis led me to read some rather interesting articles about one of the influential members of Pink Floyd, David Gilmour. So much so that I am spending this week doing some tinkering and deconstruction of my own, especially the track Marooned from the album "The Division Bell"
About the trackIt is an instrumental track on the 1994 album
The Division Bell. In watching the YouTube videos I downloaded yesterday its clear is quite a heavily improvised piece, and the key factor is its played through a pitch shift pedal (to avoid tuning the guitar up to a nonstandard tuning) to hit those high "guitar crying" notes. So ja, am messing around to see if I can learn to play it, seeing I've been in quite a funk for the last 6 months playing Andy Summers' stuff which breaks my hands! Of course, when I take delivery of my new Fender Strat they better install a whammy bar so I can do the necessary bends to match what you hear on the record. (makes note to self to tell music store)
About the Black StratIts a heavily modified Fender reissue Stratocaster that David bought in New York somewhere in 1970. He painted it black, including the pickguard. It had, at one time, been fitted with a thrid party tremolo arm, which necessitated the removal of some wood. The proper Fender tremolo unit has been since fitted and the missing wood replaced with new wood. Without spoiling it too much, you can read the full details on the website.
