Sorry for yet another controversial post, but I do feel what is happening now is outrageous!
Back in 2005, I was made aware of the JAWUG, by several people (daffy et, al) who started it up and frequented myadsl.co.za and made people aware of it.
In 2005 I registered an account there as I thought it would be cool to get involved. My account is still active.
A couple of years later I found these guys are actually a bunch of schmucks: when I asked some questions I got the stock-standard South African response from them, treated me like a n00b... At the time I thought, they were just being ridiculous and left it at that.
Some time in 2006/2007 I chatted with them on IRC and they treated me like a piece of crap.... took 1/2 an hour to even respond to me.
Last year my e-mail box got flooded with some of their crap from their mailing list and I was pretty cheesed off and told them off.
So the other day, while I was on holiday, some dude e-mails me that he wanted to connect to me potentially. So I told him, sorry dude, I am kinda like selling my house and moving out of the crappy area (Realistically I cannot be a part of JAWUG even if I tried, with the power going out almost every second day like in Zimbabwe). So the other night I pick up kratos (the chap who emailed me) on my netbook computer in my lounge, and judging by his signal, he's either in my complex, or in the one next door. So I thought this would be interesting to check out... I went there yesterday. Now they have the nerve to charge a membership fee of R360, something that was always free. So they've gone to typical SA behaviour #2, make it free for years, then suddenly charge money...
Well you can guess what will happen. I won't join their network, they can go shove it.
