Dear subscriber and/or selected recipient. Some of you may have already seen the article that appeared in the Saturday Star of yesterday, 13 August 2011 wherein it was reported that JMPD officers serving in the operations department have been told that they are to collectively issue no less than 100,000 infringement notices for physical moving violations per month in the new financial year.Whilst this was published on the front page of the Saturday Star and may at first appear as yet another money-making racket on the part of the JMPD – especially when the figure of R20 million a month is attached to it, JPSA is of the viewpoint that this is in fact a step in the right direction, despite the fact that it has been handled very badly by the JMPD. We have to forgive them for their indiscretion and inability to give any other justification other than revenue generation and bear in mind that theirs is an organisation that employs the likes of Wayne Minnaar who does not understand the meaning of the word “must” as is defined in the English language when it comes to how AARTO infringement notices must be served. What is almost more shocking about this report however is the stance that SA Municipal Workers Union has taken; comparing the requirement that officers actually do their jobs to imposing “slave-like working conditions” on them. How extraordinary this is of a member organisation of COSATU which has been so publicly outspoken about corruption and the “Predator State” since it now seems that they are of the opinion that so long as the predators are members of their Union, it is okay for them to be lazy and corrupt.I have published my commentary on this story at http://bit.ly/qWrlb8 and invite you to go and view it and add your comments. It may also be re-published anywhere you see fit.
