Cause it's Friday, and so that we can all see how volcanic ash could be a problem
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you with a cut-away General Electric Turbojet Engine

I am in the process of acquiring such an engine, albeit a small scale model, like the one Jeremy Clarkson affixed to a bicycle.

Brilliant illustration,
You can clearly see from that photo how the various fans compress the air prior to the combustion chamber.

Information wants to be free

What are you looking at paying Jason?

Well Bruce,

I have no idea what the scale models cost, my dad told me he's seen them at various hobby shops.
I also hang around a lot at Rand Airport as I am an aviation nut. So getting some fuel is a piece of cake.

I know a few people on the internet, got themselves each a Pratt and Whitney stripped from a very small jet. One guy put it into his car.
