Driving with headlamps on during the day - a bad idea!

The LEAD-SA crowd, in their infinite wisdom want you to drive with your headlights on during the day.
Unfortunately, none of those very clever peoples actually considered that maybe, just maybe cars have headlamps, for a purpose, and that is, for use at night.

A picture paints a thousand words, so apt in this case...

As you can see folks, the glass melted a nice bubble, and since this is likely borosilicate glass, this lamp must have been sitting at over 900 degrees centigrade.

My theory is insufficient cooling, because the car was driven on a typical stinking hot Gauteng day, with the headlights on, a-la LEAD SA.

And this is NOT covered by your motor plan. The bulb costs R170 + R410 labour, which you have to pay out of your own pocket, every 3 months.

LEAD-SA, not the brightest crayons in the box I am afraid...

I never really saw the logic to the whole "driving with your lights on during the day" thing, it kind of seemed like a copout to cater for people who shouldnt be driving in the first place.

Also, why is there a nipple on the light bulb?

Speaking under correction here, but I think they got the idea from countries like Norway & Sweden where everybody drives with their lights on all day & night, all year long. In the winter there's hardly any daylight and in summer it's minimal. So it makes sense there.
The big difference is that even in summer in those countries, the temperatures are very low to say the least. In Africa it's obviously a bit of a different story.
Another example of trying / importing an idea that works in certain European countries, but can't work in Africa...

I'm shocked at the costs of the headlamps and the labour though. What kind of car is it Jason?
I recently had to replace a single headlamp bulb on my admittedly fairly old Opel (you've seen it), but that cost me about R40 or R60 bucks.
Installing it was a cinch and I did it myself in under 10 minutes. I know some of the latest model cars have very limited space to work under the hood, but surely one can get a hand in there to undo and pop in a new light bulb?

Epsilon,

Yes this is the thing, in European countries there's only two kinds of weather, cold, and fucking cold.
This was on my wife's Opel Corsa D. To avoid her motor plan having a hernia and them threatening to cancel it again, I did the job myself. The bulbs, good ones, cost as much as R140, the cheap wing-wong ones cost around R30.
The one headlight is completely boxed in so it cost me 3 hours to remove the entire front bumper of the car to get the headlamp out.
With every new Corsa model GM will show us how much more crap they can squash into the front of the car. I have small hands and there's no ways you can even get the back cover of the headlamp off, to get the bulb out.

That's a glass pinch, that's where they draw the vacuum and fill the bulb with argon. It was recently shown on How Its Made on the Discovery Channel, you should be able to find it on YouTube.

Opel dealership bulbs? For me there is no difference in the grey cloned parts unless it comes to the engine or gearbox. Normally their spares are about 4-10x thw price of grey import.
On an Opel you should be able to readily access the rear of the headlamps without removing anything (don't know how the situation is on the latest models thouh...)

Nope, these are bulbs from places like Metro, Builder's warehouse, the premium brands such as OSRAM.

The vehicle in question:

There is tons of computer boxes and other electronics behind each headlamp its almost impossible to get one's hand in there

But you must admit, its an awesome car, to drive and to look at.
Mine is the 4 door version, and that car rocks!

Call me cynical, but I've also always seen the headlight initiative as a pretty crap idea that seems to serve little purpose other than making a minority feel chuffed about themselves for doing "their part" to promote awareness about Lead SA, because they couldn't be arsed to do anything else to contribute a significant change.

Never considered the potential damage - that picture really does say it all!

Well that's the jist of what I was saying if you read between my lines.
I tend to say it in that way because of how I've been treated on other forums, saying it directly lends oneself to personal attacks.

Indeed the whole LEADSA thing is a bunch of people, mostly TALK RADIO 702 fanboys who think they can force change on the black government by doing all of this crap.

What really pissed me off is how these people (John Robbie) came to the defense of Bob Hewitt when his skeletons came out of the closet about his paedophilia. I was driving to work when someone close to Bob phoned in and spilled the beans and all John could say was, "that's impossibe, that's outrageous" etc.. meantime the bastard is as guilty as sin.

Because of that and other things I really don't take LEADSA seriously, if you want to change the government, you have two options, vote them out of power (which won't work in SA) or take them out by force (which will likely work)
