Lookout mobile security now has more than 2 million users

By Marin  Thursday, September 9th, 2010 at 2:46 PM PST

The mobile security firm Lookout said it now has over 2 million registered users and shared some interesting data about how its services are being used.

If you're not familiar with the company, it makes apps for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile which scans for malware, provides find-my-phone features and allows for online backup of devices.

· Found lost or stolen phones for users more than 700,000 times, with a phone found every 15 seconds over the past two months
· Backed-up over 130 million photos
· Backed-up over 625 million contacts, which if printed on business cards would wrap around the circumference of the earth 1.4 times

“Consumers are adopting smartphones at a faster pace than anyone imagined and these phones are changing how we live our daily lives,” said John Hering, CEO and founder, Lookout Mobile Security, in a prepared statement. “The mobile device has become the most personal computer and the tremendous growth Lookout has experienced is being driven by the increasing adoption of smartphones, tablets, and connected mobile devices. Consumers want peace of mind as they download apps, shop, communicate and are entertained on these devices.”

I have the Lookout app on a Motorola Droid and I'll put it through the paces over the next few days and give you a full review.

If you have a compatible handset and are interested, head over to https://www.mylookout.com/ and check it out.
Most countries in the world are supported including South Africa. Once you enter your mobile nuber you receive an SMS with a URL to doenload and install the software.
It features Anti-Virus, Backup of your data, remote wiping of your data in case of theft or loss, tracking of your device via their web site if needed amongst other things.
It can even cause your phone to set off a remote alarm.

I'll be testing it over the next week or two and give you some feedback.

Impressed.
The features all work as promised and the response is quite snappy.

The process started off by entering my phone number on their web site after which I was sent a url which when clicked on downloaded the application on to my phone.
I was then requested by the application to create an account with some very simple details required. A verification e-mail was sent to me to which I replied. Then I was able to get going.

The anti-virus did a rather speedy scan of my phone once installed and came up clean.

The next item I was prompted for was to back up my data (Contacts etc.). This also went off without a hitch. A tip here : Do not include backing up your photos as this could turn into a lengthy operation. In all fairness this option is not selected by default and the application did warn me that backing up photos may take long. I was curious and wanted to test it though. The warning was correct so I switched off that option.

Once I had everything installed on my phone I headed over to their web site to test out some features.

The missing device feature did a reasonable job of locating my phone considering it is not equipped with a GPS. I was shown a display on a map of the location of my my phone which included an estimated accuracy of the relative position of my phone. It was actually very near to the mark.

The feature whereby I could trigger a remote alarm on my phone was probably the most fun to play around with. Once I clicked the button on the web site a few seconds later my phone started emitting a very loud wail. This is something which would annoy thieves, but could also come in very handy should I ever misplace my phone somewhere.

For obvious reasons I did not try the remote data wiping option.

I could access all my contacts on the web site which I had backed up earlier. There is an option to restore all of those contacts, even to for instance a new phone should the need arise.

Lookout mobile security is definitely worth it, and the best thing of all... Its free!

One shortcoming in the software though is that it does not help you if your phone gets stolen.
Since the software is based around your SIM card (which is one of the first things thieves tend to remove in a stolen phone) and Mobile number, none of the 'Missing Phone' options ('Locate', 'Scream' or 'Nuke') will work if the device is switched off or the SIM card has been removed.
Just be aware of this limitation.
