Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Unlike the not too distant DVD release of the remake of the original Spartacus movie this series is a keeper.

Be warned though, if you don't like a ton of blood & guts & gore this will not be for you.
Sex and nudity are there in abundance as well as with the series "Rome".

It traces the role of Spartacus starting with the Thracian alliance with the Romans which is inevitably broken by the Romans which leads to his subsequent capture and enslavement by the Romans condemned to die in the arena at the hands of gladiators.
Fate and an iron will has other plans in store for Spartacus however...

The cinematography of the combat sequences reminds very much of that seen in "The 300" with a bit more gore and detail.
This series also clearly illustrates the cruelty of the system of Roman slavery on which the empire was built.
Through their own hand the Romans shape and hammer Spartacus into the lethal killing machine he is destined to embrace or be destroyed by.

"Tagline: Some legends are written in blood."

Quote:
"Batiatus: How many men would you kill to see your wife again?
Spartacus: I would kill them all."

8 / 10

Rome I loved, but Spartacus: Blood and Sand was far too cheesy for me. I watched 2 episodes, then gave up. It's true that the series is visually in the style of 300, but the obviously inferior budget of Spartacus doesn't allow for it to be as immersive for this viewer. Plus, that cinematography is a gimmick that works well for 90 minutes, but gets somewhat stale if you see it every week in a TV show.

Eps, if you like these, you might also like The Tudors - have you been watching that? I'm still enjoying it in the 4th season.

I watched a couple of episodes of "The Tudors" on DSTV (I think it was the first series) quite a long time ago.
I never really got into it, possibly because I did not watch it from the start and missed some episodes in between.

Sparticus came off as an exploitative knock-off of 300 at first, but I'm really glad I kept going as I loved the way the story unfolded and wound up watching the entire season in just two days. It's a real shame that Andy Whitfield won't be reprising his role for the second season as he turned out to be a very likable protagonist, hopefully he'll recover and return to the show if they continue past the next season.

I was disappointed with the ending of Gods of the Arena, but I guess it allows for some of the cast to return in Blood and Sand season 2 which starts in Jan next year.

That's great news GL! :)
Wonder how they'll go about it though as I heard/thought the original screenplay/script writer is deceased.

Loved Spartacus blood and sand, although while gods of the arena was still good, it wasn't as good as blood and sand
