Computer Sound Effects in TV

Hi there

I have recently been watching some TV, something I don't often do as I prefer to either be coding or building something - I still maintain TV is mindless drivel!

I notice that any program, that features the use of a whizzbang computer (CSI, NCIS, etc...) the computers make these soft "beeping noises" each time a character is drawn on the screen complete with OVER-THE-TOP GUIs (using massive, and expensive fonts) and other insanely whizz-bang (and very impractical) features. The "fingerprint search" is quite amusing... one would think that processing power could be saved and the speed of the search increased 100 fold without having to draw hundreds of bitmapped images of fingerprints to the screen.

The noises/sound effects are MOST ANNOYING, as we all know our computers don't make a soft mouse-like noise when we search Google or when we're crunching numbers..

Can someone please explain to me WHY THIS IS NECESSARY???

LOL :D

I'm with you on all of this Jason.
That's just Hollywood for you.

Another thing that irritates the crap out of me is when they get some grainy B&W CCTV footage and can then just magically keep zooming in (like 1000%) while the useless pixellated detail is then made crystal clear & razor sharp, so they can even identify a suspect off a reflection in a window that's so far off it makes no sense.

Oh yes.. they've learnt in Hollywood how to upsample bitmaps flawlessly... Imagine that, if it REALLY WORKED, that's a billion-dollar industry waiting to be unleashed on the industry! Then we wouldn't need ass-expensive DSLR's anymore...

Oh and another thing I've noticed, they love to flaunt the high-end Canon DSLR's now in CSI, and NCIS... no wonder people in ZA are buying them to "Keep up with the TV Joneses" and take rotten pics with a camera I wish I could afford and actually use to its potential!

The thing with computers are, if you use them correctly it's not a very interesting activity to watch. Guy typing in shell? BORING! And remember, most of today's TV zombie population care more about eye candy than substance.

It was the same with Watson winning Jeopardy! People were more impressed with Deep Blue than Watson because they simply do not understand the technology behind it. (I can't play chess so it must be hard to do. But I can understand the Jeopardy! questions, so it can't be that hard for the computer to do, right?)

So last night when putting the little one to bed.. there's CSI Miami on the TV.

I see dropped frames are now fashionable. With such poor camera work( frame dropping and camera shake galore) I actually endured the development a headache watching that... the juttering around and dropped frames actually made me physically nauseous.

If this is what the future holds for television.... I am so sorry I don't want anything to do with it.
