#3 Name & ShameCollusion between the SAPS & Tow truck operators? This one is a total shocker!
On Sunday 12 December 2010 after having a few beers at a local pub less than 2km from my home, I got in my car and drove back.
Within 200m of the pub I was pulled over by a marked SAPS double cab vehicle.
At the same time a tow truck stopped behind my vehicle.
The policeman (in uniform) informed me that I had too much too drink, and could not proceed any further.
He then told me that my vehicle would be towed and impounded.
Not wishing to argue, and actually being thankful that I was not being arrested, I went along with the story.
The tow truck driver even dropped me off at home.
Monday Morning:I visit the local SAPS offices and inquired re. the incident and asked where I can get my vehicle back from.
The SAPS denied all knowledge of such an incident, said that they do not even operate double cab bakkies.
They also informed me that '
they do not work that way' and the only reason why they would impound a vehicle is if there was a serious crime involved.
Thankfully the policeman behind the desk was able to give me the names (and looked up the numbers) of 2 Tow Truck companies that operate in the area.
Phoned them up and lo and behold:
Odendal Breakdown Services had the vehicle in their possession claiming it was involved in an accident and that's why they towed it.
What utter bullshit!
Next :
They wanted R4100 to release the vehicle to me! Drove through to their premises and
there was not a singe mark on the car!!! So much for the car having been in 'an accident'!!!
I also asked them for a
copy of any document I may have signed (which I didn't) giving them permission to tow the vehicle.
They could not produce one! They gave me some lame-assed excuse of the driver having the papers with him, BUT he would only be back at the office on the 15th!
After a
huge argument with them they reduced the release fee first to R2000 and then to R1800.
Bunch of thieves!
I ended up paying the release fee.
Sure I could have gone to the police and laid a charge of theft, but a court case would take months, and they would still be charging me R200/day while that would be going on.
Be warned....
