Yes you make a valid point about cases in the US, I forgot about those.
Basically, to put it in a nutshell- this so-called religion is the pursuit of an unattainable goal. That of going up to some incredibly high level in the cult (OT levels).
The religion works on the basis of progressions, where a follower has to pay sums of money for "training" to progress in the thing. This works out to some hefty sums of cash. They also believe we are all here as a result of some spaceship from the planet Xenu!
In this place I worked, I discovered, three months into the job, who and what they were after I heard some strange words being bandied about by their children who sat upstairs during school holidays. Google then made me realize what a pile of doggie doo I got myself into. The owner of the company had a policy where he wanted a video camera on every employee, and he did it, there were about 45 employees and 45 cameras in total. They basically denied me leave, lunchtimes, and going off early, even in emergencies. Salary was a joke and many times they dangled the carrot before me, all I had to do was read the Dianetics book and then I was promised a salary increase. I told them to go and f**k themselves on each occasion, which led to first of all myself being treated badly for the remainder of my stay there, and then eventually they tried to get to me psychologically. I was fortunately smarter than they were. The real shocker came when they acquired a well known automotive aftermarket outfit, and promptly made all their staff who came on board, be given Scientology books that they had to read and be tested on. Even the employee contracts reeked of this shit, as did all other forms of contract I saw.
Unfortunately, since that was my first real engineering position, it took me a long time to find something else, but I eventually did quit and got my ass the hell out of there.
