I came across this little software gem while looking for something to allow me to share an internet connection via the Wi-Fi on my laptop recently.
The main reason I wanted it was because I do not always have a wireless router handy. Having recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S plus smartphone, I anticipated downloading apps from the Android Market as well as the usual software updates etc. With 3G and HSPA data costing what it does, I wanted to share my USB iBurst modem's internet while I was out of office etc. instead of the far more expensive alternative.
InstallationThis was a cinch on my Windows 7 machine and all the necessary hardware was identified correctly.
Note: Older hardware running Windows XP or Vista may encounter problems because Connectify makes use AP (Access Point) infrastructure to create connections. Certain wireless cards and the drivers mentioned previously make use of Ad Hoc networks which means that the devices connect to one another when in range without making use of an AP. Unfortunately most Android devices do not allow Ad Hoc connections (Blackberry has issues as well but on some models there is a workaround available). Ideally one would need Windows 7 as well as a Windows 7 compliant network driver. See
this page for more details.

UsageOnce up and running I ad no problems whatsoever connecting to the new Wi-Fi hotspot with my Samsung Galaxy phone. I switched of all the normal packet data (GPRS, EDGE, 3G etc) on the phone to be sure and was able to make use of a much more economical data rate via the wireless hotspot.
I suppose this could come in handy for many kinds of other devices with Wi-Fi networking as well, or if you for instance have 2 laptops but only one 3G dongle and there's not a router handy.
Known IssuesNone at this time, but be sure to check the hardware and software requirements.
They have a fairly extensive list available on their web site.
